Influenced from Kalamkari Painting, Pattra or Patta Chitra painting is similarly influenced in Odisha and West Bengal to create a style of story telling using images and words. Pattachitra art form is known for its intricate details as well as mythological narratives and folktales inscribed in it. Think 5th century comic books but with religious storytelling because that was the on going topic of discussion and intellect inclination of the people then. The lines are bold and clean. Generally, there are no landscapes, perspectives, and distant views. The background on which the figures are represented, is delineated with decorations of flowers and foliage and is mostly painted in red color. All the paintings are given decorative borders - like the Tanjore style of art. The whole painting is conceived in the form of a design on a given canvas. Now can you see the difference between the styles of art in each state but the story line is always almost the same!? Once the countries change altogether, the faith of the people and the weather conditions change as well. This is how cotton cloth is changed to wool when we go up north and because paints dry fast, they turn into threads and oil paints.
