Djokovic wins 8th Australian Open title
Novak Djokovic won his eight Australian Open title to stand on top of the game, and rankings. The Serbian star fought back to beat fifth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 over three hours and 59 minutes in Sunday’s final for his 17th Grand Slam championship crown.
Only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (19) have won more major singles titles in the sport’s history. The Big Three has now won 13 consecutive majors and 56 of the past 67.
Sofia Kenin won her maiden Grand Slam title as she beat Garbine Muguruza in the 2020 Australian Open final. The American won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and three minutes against the Spaniard, who was contesting her first Grand Slam final since 2017 and bidding for her third major title.
While Nikola Mektic and Barbora Krejcikova made a perfect team debut at the Australian Open, clinching the mixed doubles title with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-1 victory against Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
Eleventh seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury halted the incredible doubles run of Australian Open wildcards Max Purcell and Luke Saville, crushing them 6-4, 6-2 in the final to win the Men’s Doubles title. While the Women’s Doubles was won by Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic. They won their second Australian Open title, defeating Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová in the final by 6–2, 6–1.
