These individual portraits were the fine art version of ‘selfies’. Close up of these subjects were painted in great detail keeping the perspective in mind. Then came the NeoClassicism period where figures were idealised and every muscle and contour was painted or sculpted in great detail. NeoClassicism literally means ‘new art of the highest order’. This was astonishing to the viewers because clean and crisp lines were seen. Each painting or sculpture were given its own importance. Faces, although, portrayed no emotion. They were mostly calm and cool. Remember how we talked about the socio-economic vibe reflecting in the art? So this was before the world knew what war was and every nation were friends with each other. Perspective was another dimension that came into being. The eyes, poise of the bodies, posture, was so elegant because of the alignment of each of these has. Textile that was depicted was of high quality and the drapes were shown had immensely delicate style to it. Greece was the main area of influence during this period. There were many senior artists who made masterpieces during those time like: Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brunfrom France, Anselm Feuerbacha German painter and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersbergall who made a lot of Self Portraits and portraits of other people. Taking inspiration from Greece, artists from other countries would learn the technique and experience and go to their own countries like Italy, America, Switzerland, Germany, Poland and make their own versions of Neo Classicism style of paintings and sculptures. This is indeed how we spread the knowledge around the world and globalization takes place. After NeoClassicism the artists went even more internal with their thoughts and started expressing their ‘feelings’ which brought about the dreamy fairytale times of Romanticism! We’ll talk about it next week.
