Hooray! Shivangi becomes first woman pilot in Indian Navy

Sub-lieutenant Shivangi became the first woman pilot for the Indian Navy. The 24-year-old was born in the city of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Her induction has been seen as another milestone for the Armed Forces. Indian armed forces have been a bit too reluctant in the past over entry of women in the defence forces. But this has been changing with time. Until 1992, Indian Naval Force allowed women only in the medical area. Shivangi was commissioned into the Indian Navy last year after her initial training. She joined operational duties at the Kochi naval base. Shivangi will be tasked with flying Dornier aircraft, which are used by the navy for transport and maritime reconnaissance, taking off and landing on the shore, rather than from an aircraft carrier. After completing a mechanical engineering degree at the Sikkim Manipal University of Technology, Shivangi began further studies at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur. Did you know In 2016, the Indian Air Force enlisted women pilots for the first time and in May 2019, Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth became the first woman pilot to qualify to undertake combat missions on a fighter jet.
