Krishna by Nicholas Roerich
Year: 1930
Medium: Tempera, Canvas
Location: Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York, USA.
Nicholas Roerich was born on 9th October 1874 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a painter, writer, archeologist, theosophist, philosopher, and a public figure who was extremely spiritual. Roerich dedicated much of his life and work to the Himalayas, which was also his home.
He was fondly admired by great minds like Einstein, Gandhi Ji, Franklin D Roosevelt. He had a fascination with the Himalayas and led an epic expedition to the mountains before he finally settled down in Himachal and immortalised these colossal mountains in his art.
There are nine Indian artists whose paintings are not allowed to be sold outside of India as they are the pride of our country. Eight are of Indian origin and one is Nicholas Roerich. His spiritual contribution to our country has created a rich heritage that we are proud of.
One such painting in particular is of Krishna sitting under a blooming tree, engrossed in playing his flute with the backdrop of the Himalayas. For one who has a religious bent, they will admire the beauty and peaceful nature of Krishna. And for those who are not, will appreciate the detailed painting of the magnificent nature. Both bring calmness and freshness into you.
Roerich has personified Himalayas and given it an identity of his own with his interpretation. Indeed, when I see the Himalaya mountain range after seeing his paintings, I feel he has shown me how to appreciate every crevice of the mountains, light and shadow, every turn, curve and colors.
