Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player for a record sixth time. It is the 32-year-old Argentine's first Ballon d'Or since 2015 and comes after he scored 54 times for club and country in 2018-19, in which Barca won La Liga. Messi piped the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool stars Virgil Van Digk and Sadio Mane to walk away with yet another Ballon d'Or. Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award five times. The Argentine has not showed any signs of slowing down since the start of the new European season, marking his 700th game for Barcelona last week with a goal and two assists in beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1. So far this year, Messi has 41 goals in 44 games.
