Art column: Padma awards in the field of Art Art World Kinjal Trivedi Padma Shri Awards for the field of Art Padma Shri is one of the highest Civilian Honours in the Republic of India. This means, over years and decades, if a person has excelled in his own field be it academics or arts or literature and also helped spread the knowledge in the community of all over the country, they get an honour for serving for their own country. This is a matter of pride for the individual themselves and for the entire country as we gain such amazing knowledge from our ancestors. Since here we talk about the field of Arts, let us meet a few intellectuals who have been awarded in 2021. Annavarapu Ramaswamy was born on March 27, 1926 in Somavarappadu, West Godavari district. His father Pentayya Nadaswara was a Nadaswaram scholar. Over the past eight decades, he has given concerts in many countries such as the USA, Canada, UK, France, Muscat, Bahrain, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, Doha, Sri Lanka. In 1998 and 2012, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations awarded him the title of Outstanding Artist under the Violin category. His contribution to learn, teach and spread the knowledge of his Art has gained him the highest civilian award in 2021. Ms. Bhuri Bai is the first tribal woman artist who dared to take the traditional Pithora paintings beyond the walls of the huts in her village in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh. She transferred the folk art form from the mud walls to huge canvasses and sheets of paper. It fetched her recognition, fame, awards and money. A small book that she has co-authored with Debjani Mukherjee, research scholar with IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay, is giving Bhuri Bai the happiness she always yearned for during her years of struggle “Main aage badh paa rahi hoon (I am able to progress). The typical dotted paintings in the book tell Bhuri’s story, of her childhood days and family, village life and surroundings, how art and Nature intertwined in their lives, and yet, the culture and customs followed by the Bhil people kept women away from painting their houses. Just by following her dreams she has made an incredible name for her art and community.
