Poland hit by wildfires
As if the onslaught of coronavirus wasn’t enough, Poland is fighting one more war.
Some 6,000 hectares of Biebrza National Park in northeastern Poland were ablaze due to wildfire. More than 120 firefighters rushed to extinguish the flames. Biebrza is home to 59,000 hectares of wetlands, wildlife such as moose, beavers, and unique species of birds, and hiking trails.
Fires in the Biebrza National Park break out every year, but such a large one has not been there for years. The situation is very serious. And the authorities believe they may have to fight it for months to come.
The wildfires are the result of heat and drought. Last year wildfires in the Amazon basin and Australia affected thousands of people, animals and businesses.
Poland has witnessed more than 10,000 Covid 19 cases and around 450 deaths.
Poland isn’t a small country, it’s actually one of the largest ones. Poland is bigger than Italy and the UK.
