Republic Day facts you should know It was on January 26, 1930 that Purna Swaraj Day or India’s Independence Day was first celebrated. This was the day the country decided to push for complete freedom from the British. After the Constitution was framed, our leaders decided to celebrate Indian Republic Day on January 26 to commemorate that day. There are two copies of the Indian Constitution, one in English and one in Hindi. Both copies of the Constitution of India are handwritten. There are no printed copies of the Constitution of India. The Indian Constitution is only calligraphed. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the chairman of the committee to prepare a Draft Constitution for India. The committee took two years, eleven months and eighteen days to complete its historic task of drafting the Constitution for Independent India. Copies of the handwritten Constitution of Indian were signed by 308 Assembly members on January 24, 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of India on January 26, 1950. The Indian Constitution is the longest one to be written in the world. It has 448 articles divided into 22 parts and 12 schedules. ‘Jana Gana Mana’, the National Anthem of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on January 24, 1950. The Republic Day is celebrated for three days, and culminates with Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29. It is on this day that many prestigious bravery awards like the Veer Chakra, Maha Veer Chakra, Param Veer Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Ashoka Chakra are presented to deserving men and women of courage. During the Republic Day parade, a Christian song “Abide With Me” is played and it is considered as one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite songs.
