Art column: The shock value of art! Art world Kinjal Trivedi The shock value of art! History of Art is a very interesting field. It helps us go to the root of the reason why we see what we see, feel what we feel, and also interact the way we do. Do you ever realise that when we follow our day to day routine, we become immune to what we are going to do, how we are going to behave in school, with parents, or even with friends or the internet in general. What really gets our attention is that we stand up and take notice. We want to spend that extra time and effort in knowing what the subject is. The answer is 'shock value'. This feeling makes us feel 'different' or 'sets us apart' from what our fellow humans are doing. This makes people drop everything, take notice and provoke reactions from the crowd. Shock value creates an immediate change in our neurotransmitters that gives us a rush of fear, aggressiveness, happiness and a sense of thrill. Around us, we see these examples as 'breaking news' or someone winning a prize unexpectedly, or a celebrity dressing up so weird that you drop everything and take notice of their absurdity. If someone is talking or laughing real loud at a public place, you will be curious to know what they are laughing about and you want to be a part of that thrill. In Art history, we talk about the establishment and transition of different eras. What era are we in now? Are we transitioning to any era? Although our ancestors have established our heritage, we are transitioning to "THE SHOCK VALUE" among us. In art, if I paint something out of character that people do not expect, it will be appreciated even more. If I draw a nature landscape as it is in real life, I would rather take a photograph than paint. For example, if I give it my own style and voice to the landscape, it will be personified as a Kinjal Trivedi painting. Using a particular style, however vague it is, does need deep knowledge of our resources and also needs practice.

The answer is ‘shock value’.

This feeling makes us feel ‘different’ or ‘sets us apart’ from what our fellow humans are doing. This makes people drop everything, take notice and provoke reactions from the crowd.

Shock value creates an immediate change in our neurotransmitters that gives us a rush of fear, aggressiveness, happiness and a sense of thrill.

Around us, we see these examples as ‘breaking news’ or someone winning a prize unexpectedly, or a celebrity dressing up so weird that you drop everything and take notice of their absurdity. If someone is talking or laughing real loud at a public place, you will be curious to know what they are laughing about and you want to be a part of that thrill.

In Art history, we talk about the establishment and transition of different eras.

What era are we in now? Are we transitioning to any era?

Although our ancestors have established our heritage, we are transitioning to “THE SHOCK VALUE” among us.

But this madness has a systematic method to its approach and using the right technique and combination is the real knowledge between making the shock value successful or just plain jane.
