Why are the US and Iran fighting?
Relations between the US and Iran have never been too friendly but the recent events could lead to a new low in the ongoing tussle. Recently, Iran launched missile attacks on two US military bases in Iraq. On the other hand, the US has imposed more sanctions on Iran. But that’s not the whole story. Read on to know what happened…
What triggered the new attacks?
On January 3, 2020, the US did air strikes on Baghdad airport in which Iran’s Major General Qassem Soleimani and other important officers of Iran and Iraq were killed.
General Soleimani was the commander of the Qods Force, the external intelligence and security unit of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
President Donald Trump’s government holds General Soleimani responsible for the deaths of scores of American soldiers in Iraq.
Missile attacks on each other’s territories had been going on for some time but the death of General Soleimani was a serious blow to Iran.
How Iran reacted?
As expected, Iran was furious and vowed a forceful revenge for the killing, raising the risks of a direct war between the US and Iran to an all-time high.
The funeral procession of the dead General was attended by hundreds of thousands of Iranians who demanded the government to avenge his death.
Iran bombed US bases in Iraq. The missile hit US embassy in Iraq too but no casualty was reported.
How the world stands?
Iraq, on whose land the events are happening, does not want anything to do with the strikes. The other West Asian countries too have been asking the two warring nations to talk and solve their problems amicably.
Iran is based in West Asia which is rich in oil and petroleum. In case of war, the oil and petrol prices would shoot up and it would affect India and other economies hard. India is already reeling under economic pressures, with oil prices rising products would get more expensive.
We can only wait and watch what happens next, and pray that the two countries act responsibly to avoid any disaster — human or natural.
