Would Messi leave Barca?
As if their loss to Bayern Munich in the Champion League was not enough, Barcelona is battling yet another debacle: the news of their star player Lionel Messi’s exit. Yes, Messi has formally asked Barcelona to let him go.
Why is it important?
Over the years, Messi has become synonymous with Barcelona. Messi joined Barca when he was 13. He made the first team debut at 16 and since then, helped them scale unprecedented heights, and established the Catalan side as the best football club in the world. Barca’s formidable position in the world of football is often credited to Messi, who is considered as the greatest football player ever born by his fans.
Is he allowed to leave?
In the past too there have been rumours about Messi leaving the club but they were just that: rumours. But now even the Barcelona management has acknowledged that Messi has formally asked to leave the team. His contract was supposed to end by May 2021 but because of Coronavirus, there were changes in few clauses and yes, now he can leave the club.
Why leave now?
There have been few reports about disagreement between Messi and the team management. Messi was unhappy that in the last five years, the club let go of several key players, including Brazilian star Neymar, who was sold to French side Paris Saint-Germain. There have also been few disagreements between the players and the management regarding agreement clauses and payments during the pandemic.
Multiple reports in the Spanish and English press have said that the two Manchester clubs – City and United – have shown interest in signing Messi. Italian giants Inter Milan, too, have shown interest.
