Donald Trump impeached for second time
Washington
US President Donald Trump has been impeached again. This time for inciting violence that led to rioting at the Capitol building and the death of five people including a policeman.
Before considering impeachment, the House had asked Vice President Mike Pence to use the 25th Amendment to remove Trump. When Pence refused, Democrats began the effort to impeach Trump. The members of the House voted 232-197 to impeach Trump. Ten Republicans joined the Democrats in voting for impeachment.
What happened at the Capitol?
Last week, the US Congress met to officially count the election results of the Electoral College, which Democrat Joe Biden won 306-232. Trump didn’t accept that he lost the election, and encouraged Republican lawmakers to protest the results. While the Congress was meeting, Trump spoke to a rally of his supporters. He repeated his claim that the election was stolen, and encouraged them to march on the Capitol. The mob of rioters, many carrying weapons, broke violently into the US Capitol building, forcing lawmakers to run for safety. The police and security personnel were able to clear the building after several hours, and the Congress continued their count, finally approving the Electoral College result.
What's the 25th Amendment?
The 25th Amendment of the US Constitution has four sections. These sections pertain to what may happen if the sitting President or Vice-president dies or the President is unable to discharge his duties rightfully. It also specifies that if the vice-president and the majority of the Cabinet declare the president unfit, they could remove the president from power.
