Paw Patrol: Let’s show some love to our desi dogs New Delhi Prime minister Narendra Modi actually read animal lovers’ minds when he talked about loving Indian breeds of dogs during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme. Animal lovers were overjoyed when the PM spoke about the beauty and resilience of Indian dogs, and the induction of several indigenous breeds into the Armed Forces. As the prime minister urged Indians to adopt dogs of Indian breeds, here’s your guide to get one of your own home... Mudhol hounds These dogs come from the region bordering Karnataka and Maharashtra. According to a popular legend, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj bred and used these dogs in his army. They are also called the Caravan hounds, for their association with travellers from various parts of Asia. Mudhol hounds have narrow heads that are disproportionately smaller to their bodies, but are tall in height. Rajapalayam Rajapalayam is an Indian Sighthound and purest breed of Indian hunting dogs, used predominantly for hunting wild boar. Rajapalayam is a large milk white colour dog, native to the town of Rajapalayam Tamil Nadu. Combai Combai or Kombai dog breed is found in the south of India and has more powerful jaws than Rajapalayam. The Combai are a very ancient breed of dog and one of the superior dog breeds in south India,used for hunting and keeping watch. Himachali hounds The Himachali hounds are locally known as the ‘Gaddi kutta’, and come from the Himalayan region. They are massive, mastiff-like dogs with thick fur to protect them from the cold. They look similar to the Tibetan mastiff but are less bulky. Pariah dogs Indian Pariah Dogs are one of the oldest in the world,found throughout the Indian subcontinent. The pariah dog breed is a very social dog,extremely alert watch dogs and highly intelligent. Bakharwal Dog Bakharwal Dog breed is an ancient breed found in the majestic Himalayan Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Bakharwal Dogs are working and herding dogs and the species is on verge of extinction. Kanni The Kanni dog is another breed from Tamil Nadu, and its name translates to “pure” in Tamil after its fierce loyalty. Like the Rajapalayam, Kanni dogs specialise in hunting hares, wild boars, and blackbucks. Chippiparai While Chippiparai is one of the breed of Indian hunting dogs found in the area around Periyar Lake. The Chippiparai dog is used for hunting wild boar and an intelligent breed and a wonderful watchdog. Kumaon mastiff Kumaon Mastiff also known as Indian Mastiff is a working breed of dog from Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. Indian or Kumaon Mastiff is a large breed dog with powerful head and a strong neck and great guarding ability.
