An adventure with a heart!
By Finding ’Ohana

Slug Movie Review: Finding ’Ohana Headline: An adventure with a heart! Ahoy, all fans of India Jones and Percy Jackson! Here’s some treat for you to binge during your weekends. For all the adventure loving kids, the year may as well start with Finding ’Ohana. This Jude Weng’s directorial debut has the right amount of emotion, drama, action, thrill and adventure. The movie essentially celebrates Hawaiian culture and heritage while narrating an adventurous story. The story is about a family and how they unravel their past. Twelve year old Pili lives with her elder brother Ioane and widowed mother Leilani in Brooklyn. When Leilani’s father, Kimo, has a heart attack, Leilani takes Pili and Ioane to Oahu to spend time with him. The siblings are obviously furious at being stuck in the middle of nowhere—with no WiFi on top of everything. But things get better once Pili meets Casper, another know-it-all 12-year-old, finds an old journal which promises clues to a fabled treasure and Ioane meets Casper’s elder sister, Hana. The four of them then venture out for a treasure and things take an adventurous and dangerous turn. How they get out of it is both fun and scary to watch. The character sketches are done to perfection, so are the locations. Children have the most fun and screen time, right deserved, as they are the actual heroes of the movie. There are a lot of nods to other adventure movies (read Indiana Jones) and books. But the most important part is how the movie connects a journey with history and family. This is a movie with its heart in the right place and a must watch if you like some good narratives with action. And yes, while you have fun don’t forget to note down the Hawaiian words the movie teaches you.
