Maha Polls: Know more about State Assembly Elections

The state of Maharashtra would go to polls next week. On October 21, people in the state would vote for the new government. And on October 24, the results would be out. The new government would sit in the Vidhan Sabha. The state elections or Assembly elections, as they’re called, are also held every five years. The head of the state is the governor, who acts on the advice of the elected representatives. The governor though is only a titular head. The real power lies in the chief minister and his council of ministers. The number of constituencies in the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha are 288, 29 constituencies are reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes and 25 are reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes. Each constituency is represented by an MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) who is chosen by the people through elections. Right now BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is in power. After the elections, whichever party gets majority would form the government. BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress are major political parties in the state. The elections are overseen by a body called Election Commission (EC). After the EC announces the poll dates, a model code of conduct comes into force. This means that the government in power cannot make long term policy decision, neither can the CM announce any such policy which may help his party win the elections. There are many restrictions on all political parties which come under model code of conduct. BJP-Shiv Sena alliance are in power right now Sharad Pawar’s NCP is one of the opposition parties
